The school was started on the 22nd of Wap, 1885 by a relentless effort of Mr. Semage Hendrik and inherited from the people of Dangedara a coconut shed which consisted of 12 children and one teacher. Due to the intervention of such philanthropists, it was handed over to the Absolute Vibhunartha Buddhist Society and it went down in history as the first Buddhist school in the city of Galle.
Mudalindu, T.B. Amarasuriya, H. Amarasuriya, M. Amarasuriya and Mudalindu Wickramasinghe took over the management of the Government on 01-12-1960 after a period of about eighty years. Guidance is more important than punishment. " Today's motto is "Science is the richest of all riches".
During Gamwasam's tenure as principal, he composed the old school anthem "Weera Du Puthun Thana Daye Mee Obe - Tathawa Nasa Perata Yanna Meniyan Ape".
The new school anthem "Kithyasas Dina Panduwan Nimawa - Sip Ruhiru Puda Nena Neth Pada" was composed by Mr. Arunasiri Mapalagama during the tenure of DM Edirisuriya as Principal.
The school has had about 15 principals since its inception and currently consists of three two-storey buildings, two more buildings, a library, a computer unit, an English activity unit, an aesthetic unit, a laboratory, an outdoor classroom, a shrine and a playground. It has become a fully fledged school.
